Booking flights on KLM vs NWA?
If I book a flight on KLM's website instead of NW, will they put you on another flight if NW strikes? If the flight info says KLM flight # operated by NW is that considered a KLM flight? Would they put you on Air France now that they are partners? This is a flight from Madrid to CVG round trip and even on NW website it lists the flights as KLM.

What's the routing? MAD-AMS-DTW(orMSP)-CVG?
If NW doesn't operate the AMS-DTW segment, then yes, KL is responsible for getting you to Cicinnati. They may use DL, they may use Continental, they may use Air France. They may even put you on a non-partner airline.

When I have gone to the KLM website I have always found that a person residing in the US cannot book with KLM via the KLM website but instead must go to the NW website. As this recently changed?
What I would do is call NW and book via phone. I would make sure that the flights you book are on a KLM plane and not on a NW plane.
I always fly KLM from SFO-Venice roundtrip..but booked through NW. But again I make sure my flights are on a KLM plane.

On the KLM website the flights are MAD/AMS KLM 1708, AMS/DTW KLM 6047, DTW/CVG KLM 5914 567.39 Euro.
On NW website the flights are still listed as KLM 1708,KLM 6047 (operated by NW), KLM 5914 (operated by NW airlink)$693. Similar return flights but all are listed as KLM. Not sure if that's because I'm booking from Europe to the states that they are all listed KLM or not.

On NW's website, one can often book the exact same itinerary to Europe on either NW or KL numbers, or a mixture of both. All the same flights.
Since you're booking from Europe, I'd just stick with KL flight numbers the whole way. Give you better protection in case NW got shut down by the strike.
With the itinerary you have now, MAD-AMS is on KL metal, AMS-DTW-CVG are on NW metals.

I think it is more important to check which airline actually operates those flights.
Flighnumbers like KL 6047, is a NW Flight 047, so NW is flying NOT KLM.
KLM flight to the US often has only 3 digits..
