That's probably one for an experienced travel agent. It's too complicated to do if you don't know what you're doing! Some things are easier to book on your own; I don't think that would be. If you go with an agent, don't start off asking price. Qualify the agent first. When you find one you are comfortable with, then arrange the ticket.

The Star and Oneworld Alliances offer RTW fares. They tend to be the most flexible and offer a large number of airlines. They also tend to be the most expensive.

There are a number of carriers that have joined together such as United and Cathey Pacific. United has an extensive network, and Cathey can take you to Asia and to Europe. These multiple airline RTW fares tend to be cheaper but their rules tend to be less flexible and of course the number of airlines you can chose from are limited to two or three.

One thing you might consider is that many of the RTW fares are substantially cheaper out of Canada. You must book either through a Canadian travel agent or a ticket office in Canada of one of the airlines you will be flying. And your originating flight must be out of Canada. In some cases you can save as much as a third.

You can also construct your own RTW through a consolidator. This may be the cheapest alternative. Generally, you're restricted to coach tickets. Many favor alliance and paired airlines because premium class tickets are bargains.
Last year Consumer Reports Travel Letter printed a whole article with a large chart on who traveled where, with whom and how restictive they were. You might see if they would send this to you by writing them or suscribe then you can puchase this back copy

To benefit from the Canadian savings must I pay for the tickets in Canada and also fly out of Canada. Can I use the US United Airlines phone reservation and buy the ticket at a Canadian United Airlines office?

To benefit from Canadian fares you can order the RTW ticket through the airline's US reservation system, they have specialists to help you. You must purchase the ticket in Canada. You can call a Canadian ticketing office of the airline and have them Fedex the ticket to you.

Basically the airlines don't want customers to go shopping around for the country with the lowest fare. Canada at the moment is an opportunity because so many Americans live close to the boarder.
