Alitalia safe
I am looking to fly direct to Rome from JFK. My choices are Delta and Alitalia. Delta will cost me $1000 more (for my family of 3). I have heard about their bankruptcy issues, rude service, and even scarier a crash cover up. I don't care if I don't get great service but am worried about safety. I am a nervous flyer. Is it worth the extra money to fly Delta? I have searched seat guru and see there is a possibility of 2 planes. One is an older airbus model I would rather not be on. Opinions.

Since the non-story of them painting the plane white makes you nervous about the Alitalia safety record then by all means pick a different airline.
AA used to fly JFK to Rome but perhaps they've cut that service.
A quick look at the Delta website shows that their flight JFK to FCO is operated by Alitalia, so you may not have a choice if you want to fly non-stop.

Obviously painting the plane is not the issue but seems a little shady if you ask me. AA has cut service I did check. Was just looking for opinions on the airline not suggestions telling me to take a boat. I do have a fear of flying but still fly all over the world and do not let my fear stop me. I was just a little more cautious since there is so much bad press about this particular airline

I don't think it's shady at all. The crash happened and was reported world-wide. Because they couldn't move it out in a timely manner, they painted the plane white in an attempt to limit the amount of bad publicity. Which ended up somewhat back-firing.
Anyhoo, as it was previously mentioned by J62, the Delta flights you see are Alitalia flights. If you want non-stop from JFK, you gotta fly Alitalia. Neither ERW or LGA offer non-stop to Rome.

I agree with you Jeff. Don't want to to book a flight and then have it canceled due to bankruptcy. That seems to be more of my concern now. United has a direct flight from EWR but very expensive. Will have to weigh my options.

See www.theguardian.com regarding the Asian accident in SFO: Described by a Thai Airways official following yesterday's incident as the "crisis communication rule", there have been several occasions in the past when airlines have rushed to paint over a plane's livery following a crash. Take the Alitalia crash in February this year, when the ATR-72 plane veered off the runway in Rome, injuring 16 people. Giancarlo Schisano, Alitalia's director of operations, described the scramble to black out the airline logo as a "routine practice used all over the world". Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, he said: "Blocking out a carrier's livery is a normal way of protecting a company's reputation, and even more in this case, because it is not an Alitalia plane." Indeed, despite being originally coated in red, white and green , the plane was leased from a Romanian budget airline, Carpatair. No surprise then, that the only marking left on the plane by workmen was a small Romanian flag.

Wow...sorry. I totally had two events mixed up. My link takes you to an article about the Thai Airways accident. Thought I remember seeing a similar article about Asiana at SFO. Either way, I think you get the message. I am going to take a break now

Overall Alitalia is not good in terms of arriving with your luggage or any kind of acceptable customer service. I had to wait a week to get my luggage at my destination and 2 days when I returned. Also, their employees, not only customer service but their flight attendants, were extremely rude and not at all helpful on both journeys and while I am still attempting to collect the claim five months later.
