Airfare NY to Madrid
A friend wants to go to Madrid for a week. I said I'd do some investigation and was stunned at the prices. Only want non-stop from JFK. Travelocity lists a fare of $307 + tax for Delta & American but when you go to select a departure date, none are available at this price. Any suggestions for other websites/options? Thanks.

Not sure about Delta, but AA does not have a direct flight from JFK to MAD. Your friend would have to connect through MIA. AA does have a codeshare with Iberia from JFK, but it will probably be more expensive.
When you get the lowest fares like this listed on one of the travel websites, you have to read the fare rules. I'm willing to bet this fare requires travel on Mon,Tue and Wed only or something very close to this. Also Saturday stay, no problem here because your friend is going for a week. And probably has some blackout dates, usually around holidays.
I just priced a JFK-MIA-MAD 12/2-12/9 and it came back with $372.30 all inclusive.

mclaurie....Travelocity shows the $307.00 fare because AA does in fact have a published fare of that amount.Actually it is shown in the database as $286.00 but with surcharges it amounts to 302.00 before taxes. However, the published fare only applies to true AA flights, not the code share with Iberia. And,the fare actually expires today.Iberia's fare is $370.30, which is only $12 higher than the AA fare would have amounted to with all the taxes added to the $302.00 fare.It does require travel Monday thru Thursday in each direction and is good for travel thru the end of March. But as I am always reminded,"subject to change until ticket is issued"..Hope this helps....S

Hello All-
Can you guys explain this to me?
Those same AA flights the Miami to Madrid leg only are priced $407.00 for the 12/2-12/9 dates and $559.00 for the 2/3-2/10 dates. Why are the prices so much higher from Miami/Madrid, than JFK/Miami/Madrid? Just wondering..

They have to match the competitors fares in order to get business.
So if others post a cheap fare between NYC and MAD, AA will match it even though they have to fly you through MIA. If there is no competition or the fares are more expensive from the others from MIA to MAD, for obvious reasons AA will try to collect more.
