1/2 price fares for infants no longer available?

I'll probably be flamed for traveling with a child but will take that risk.

We're trying to plan a trip and the direct (ideal) flight is four hours, so I'd rather get a seat for my one-year-old. But so far several airlines are telling me it's the same cost as the adult fare, which we definitely can't afford. Does anyone know if these 1/2 priced fares are a thing of the past?

I've contacted United, Northwest & US Air (America West) so far without luck.

Thanks.

Child taking a seat always cost full fare or close to it these days. I can't recall any time period where they charge half.

As you've already found out with airlines cutting services and amenities as a way to increase revenues in order to remain profitable (several are on the verge of bankruptcy) 1/2 price seats for infants no longer exist. Sorry if that doesn't fit your budget but it's a fact of airline life these days.

If you're flying internationally, then discount fares still exist. Usually at around 70% for child occupying a seat.

I just booked our fares from Honduras to Amsterdam with a return from Paris. Continental the entire way with two adult fares of around $1200 per person, baby of 2 years cost $688! She will have her own seat. Restriction is that she cannot have any luggage except for a diaper bag carryon. But for the savings in fare, I think we can do without her having to checked bags!!

Thank you! I knew that when I'd looked into Caribbean fares in the fall her seat would have been around 70% less, but thought maybe things changed in '07. This trip is US based but using credit card miles I think we can make this work. Appreciate the info.
