Oliver's Camp
Is Oliver's Camp in Tarangire worth the extra drive time and cost to stay there? Is the game viewing from Oliver's as good as that in the north? Do you have to drive long distances for game viewing from the camp? We are trying to decide between Oliver's and Tarangire Safari Lodge. We're going in Sept next year and can spend 3 nights in Tarangire if warranted.

Have not been to Olivers. Three nts in Sept is good. If you stay at Oliver's, you'll be able to spend time not far away Silale Swamp where the eles like to hang out, along with other animals. Three days allows a full day further north where you can watch for eles coming to the river from mid to late morning onward.
If you stay at TSL, then allow a full day for the swamp.
Have you seen the Tarangire Lodge (which is Tarangire Safari Lodge) threads?
On my last Tarangire trip, I decided the extra cost was not in my budget and I went to TSL rather than Olivers. But I had been in several remote tented camps prior to Tarangire. To answer if you should go to Olivers or not, it would be good to know the rest of your itinerary.

Thanks! Sounds like either place you stay you will drive somewhere else in the park!
Our tentative itinerary: we plan a couple of nights in Arusha, then 3 in Tarangire, 1 night Plantation lodge so we'll have time to do some cultural experiences after Tarangire, 2 nights Ngoro Sopa, 2 nights central Serengeti, 3 nights Serengeti Mara. At least that's what we're thinking now. Serengeti camps will be Olakira up north, and maybe Dunia in Central. We will fly north. Any suggestions?
I read the TSL thread, appreciate the link.

Well, there's no comparison between Oliver's and Tarangire Safari Lodge. While Safari Lodge has a great view, the tents are simply too close to one another and if any in your party is tall, over 6'... the beds seem rather short.
I probably wouldn't have noticed (as 5'3"), but my guide who stood 6'3" or more, sure did.
Understand that Oliver's has recently been refurbished and now has real flush loos. Though a good 1.5-2/hrs south of the park entry, it's near the Silale swamp where you can expect to find large ellee herds and other game come to drink. The camp, though inside the park has permission to do bush walks and night game drives. And, daily game drives are game drives... will take you all over the park for best game viewing and will vary daily.
