Cairo Lodging - Mayfair? Longchamps?
I don't see much on here about these 2 places. Lonely Planet reccommends the Mayfair Hotel and TripAdvisor people reccommend the Longchamps.
We are a young married couple and we're independent travellers, but not interested in hostelling in Egypt. We think that a smaller establishment will have more Egyptian character than a big resort or chain, but we don't want to stay in a dump.
What do you think of these two places? Can you suggest any others around 50USD per night? Thanks for your help!!!!

Hello,
I'd highly recommend the Talisman, a little boutique hotel with a very central location. It's a bit more than your budget (about 80 euros per night for a couple) but very nice with lots of Egyptian character.
Their own webiste is still under construction, but here is a link to an article on the Talisman in Egypt Today:

I also have some pictures which were emailed to me by the owner when I enquired -- if you drop me an email I can send them to you.
Cheers,
Julian

Jasher & I had a long discussion on hotels in Cairo back sometime between December 2005 & February 2006. Lasted over several posts.
Try running the hotel names in the internet. See what you can get.
Jasher, Did you stay at the Hotel Talisman when you were in Cairo? When I read your post I remember that I promised to check it out for you. Sorry! I did walk by it the other day, but didn't have time to go in.

Hi,
Yes, I did stay at the Talisman. I think that the hotel websites do it a disservice by labelling it a 2-star -- it's a wonderful place with a lot of character. True, it doesn't have a pool or room service, but it has A/C, lovely contemporary Egyptian decor, very nice showers and loos, and a nice little library with free Internet access in the heart of Cairo. What more could you ask?
Cheers,
Julian

Julian, did you do any type of trip report for your Egypt journey? I have been to Egypt three times (more than any other country in Africa except for SA), and its one of my favorite countries. I'm always on the look out for new hotels, places, etc.

My son has is right now in Cairo for a a week and staying at the Mayfair. It's a budget hotel, apparently clean and well run. I believe it is in Zamalek ( sp ? ) which I know to be a good area. Try Googling : Mayfair Cairo Trip Advisor. This should get you good reviews of the hotel.
