2 of us will be staying in Mauritius for 4 days in November. We will be at the Shandrani (Blue Bay area)and are keen to make the most of our stay. Obviously we want to enjoy the area (any ideas for what's best in the area will be appreciated), but we are also interested in seeing around and about. We don't mind travelling a fair distance if its worth it. How good is public transport? Will we need a car? We are also both keen walkers if that helps.

I stayed at the Shandrani last year for one day and night while our flight to Seychelles was delayed. It was close to the airport, but as I recall, there wasn't much around the resort (at least within walking distance). If you want to explore the island, you'll probably need a car or a taxi. I thought the southeastern part of the island was the most beautiful. Pretty mountains and a little more lush than the northern part of the country. I'd probably take a trip up to the Black River Gorges National Park. It shouldn't be too far from the Shandrani (35 km or so). However, the roads are narrow and slow, so it may take you longer than expected.

there are very few "highlights" of mauritius. if you do a google search they will all come up: botanical garden, new waterfront area, above mentioned gorge area and the must-do iles des pins (make that a full or half day trip). i think i'd feel pretty stranded without a car. distances are great and not at all walkable. a motor scooter would be fine if you're comfy with that mode of transport. it's very dark at night, though, most of the roads don;t have streetlights so you are on your own after the sun sets.
it is not necessary to plan any of your activities ahead of time, just pick up a brochure fro the excellent turism counter as you exit the customs area. very very easy there.

You can easily hire a car if needed and can do so with driver provided. This is a good option as you won't have to worry about getting lost!
