Arathusa Lodge in N.E. Sabi Sands. Very easy access from Jo'burg, all the wonderful benefits of Sabi Sands consessions but at far better value. I cannot recomend it highly enough. They share game drive access with 4 neighbours, so have a great range to travel. I've been there twice, 4 years apart, and will definately revisit again. http://www.arathusa.co.za/

Hi if you are in South Africa in any case I would suggest the Magaliesburg. Just out side of Johannesburg and Pretoria you will have a wide variety of things to do from the craddel of humankind to the big five .
Magaliesburg is a country town were Gauteng goes away for a quick break. For accommodation try www.rosewellspa.co.za or other guesthouses in the town most of the crazy prices have gone and you should get good priced accommodation.

ArthurSA. Check out my profile.
Yes it's an advert, a free one from a tourist/punter, recommending a location that I have greatly enjoyed. I agree, nothing subtle at all, doesnt need to be.
I've also advertised Arathusa on other topics, especialy for people looking for leopard or those that only have a few days spare in there itinerary. As I noted, great value for Sabi, and I for one will keep recommending the place.
Do you have better suggestions?

My apologies, if you have no ulterior motive. I had just thought it strange that the OP had asked for recommendations for locations appreciably far away from Magaliesburg. I live in the North of Jozi and I hike in the Magaliesberg (the mountains) quite often, but I'd not describe Magaliessburg (the town) as "just outside" of Johannesburg. But I'm happy you enjoyed your stay there.
