What is a sundowner?

This may be a silly question, but I've seen this word around and I have no idea what it means!

Thanks
Jamie

It is the word we use for "Happy Hour" while in Africa.

Each afternoon after the game drives,
the guide usually stops somewhere for everyone to enjoy drinks and munchies while enjoying the sunset before heading back to camp.

There is a thread somewhere with all of our favorite cocktails listed.

It is also the name of one of our regular Africaphile posters.

I believe the term is common all over the world. First time I ever heard it (30 some years ago) I was in Hawaii, so I don't think Africa holds an exclusive on the term. LOL There are drinkers all over the world waiting for the sun to go down!

That was one of my big questions when I first signed onto this listed... but I was too proud to ask

I searched through some old threads.

I must admit I had never hear the phrase before, but after acually watching the sun go down over the savana while enjoying a nice cold one, it truly fit the feeling!

Remember that no matter where you are, the sun is always going down somewhere in the world!

Traditionally a cocktail of quinine laced with gin to mask the flavour. An early prophylactic against malaria.

Today the tradition continues, however the cocktail choice has expanded to a full bar, however the hour has remained the same: At sun down. Hence the name of a sundowner.
