Western Desert travel and security

How's the security situation in Egypt's Western Desert at the moment? Anyone been there recently, cancelled a trip due to security, investigated and decided not to go, or are otherwise familiar with the situation? I'm looking to travel to the White Desert, Black Desert and (hopefully) Siwa later this year.

Obviously, there have been some security issues in the past, and the border with Libya is very porous. Are the White Desert and Black Desert far enough from the border to be secure? What about Siwa?

Most of the articles suggesting Egypt is safe for travel are focused on the Nile Valley, but that's not the area I'm interested in.
