TZ Migration Update

We spent the morning today in what appeared to be the greater part of the migration in the southern part of Serengeti National Park stretching between Simba and Gol Kopjes. Not enough rain in Ndutu or Serengeti and the herds have been wandering. Spent three days Feb 4-6 at Lake Masek Lodge (Ndutu area) and saw some small groups. Went to Serengeti Feb 7 and spotted growing herd from Gol Kopjes and went there this morning. Herd was immense and amazing. Also saw very large herd north of Serengeti Sopa this am headed toward southern Serengeti. We are at Ngorongoro Serena on slow computer, so thats the best report we can offer. If someone has better info, pile on! Jim and DW. More to follow after our return.

One thing we forgot to add; saw relatively small number of wildebeest calves and many pregnant females in Serengeti. Guide advised they can hold for some time (news to us!) Today in Crater we saw many calves, but there is much food and water here. WE ALSO SAW CERVAL CAT!!! Great sighting after 2-1/2 hour wait. Cat was in tall grass at side of road, and when he/she finally moved, stalked away slowly putting on a great show. Wonderful sighting with great photos. Saw big black rhino too, great sighting, scary close for 20 minutes. Coming home tomorrow night. More news as it is processed! Jim and DW.

For whatever reason, it's not unusual for the wildies in the Crater to drop their "calves" earlier than those on the open plains.

Hey, I'm not a wildie (of course), but as a human I'd want that basketball of me as soon as possible.
