Matt, Great trip report! My experience at Mombo was *exactly* like yours. I really could not imagine seeing more animals. Unfortunately our experience with some of the other guests was also similar to yours. Also interesting your comment re. Savuti. We really enjoyed Duma Tau on our trip.

When we were there in June there were 19 cubs in the Mathatha pride. Do you know what happened so that there's now only 17?

Thanks so much for this trip report! We are going on our first trip to Africa in September, and Kings Pool is one of our stops. It sounds fantastic.

Does anyone know approx how long the wild dogs will remain in the area with the pups? Do we have a chance of seeing them in mid-September?

I dont believe that they do know what happened, the guides were busy counting the cubs and came to the conclusion that there were now 17 - who knows?

Enjoy Kings Pool is it one of my favouite camps now. Mid september is probably too late for the den, by then with any luck the pups will be old enough to be mobile with the pack and hopefully some of them will make it to adulthood, unlike last year. The good news is that with two packs in the area, the Linyanti is as good a place as any to see wild dogs, but I would definitely consel against getting your hopes up. We have been disappointed before too many times.

Matt, I am curious about your comments regarding Savuti. Isn't it rated a 4 paw or classic camp??
Having not been to Duma Tau, I can't really compare the camps but do know when I was at Savuti in May the jeeps from Duma Tau where at Savuti alot??
Probably, because the Cheetah Boys were hanging near by.

Savuti is a 5+, exactly the same as Duma Tau. I will reserve judgement until I've been to Duma Tau, but if Savuti is really 5+, and the step up to 6 is really so enormous, then I, let alone my wife will never go to a 5-. I enjoyed Savuti but it seemed along way below Kings Pool, to my mind it should probbaly be rated a 5 or even 5-. Would love to hear from someone who can make the direct comparisons.

That said the game at Savuti was tremendous in my opinion, but boy is it cold. Much colder there in September than KP in July.

I have never understood how WS decide which camps are 5 paw rustic and which are 5 paw classic (rustic being 5- and classic being 5+).

Savuti certainly was not as nice as some other 5 paw we stayed in and I wasn't a fan of the outside bathrooms either. We had agreed to take on when they had said we could have the one tent with a bathtub but they'd ripped it out by the time we got there so we swapped into a room with an indoor bathroom.

Other 5 paws that we prefered include Tubu Tree (I'd say this is the best of the 5 paws we stayed in as far as accommodation space and design), Jacana (same size tents as most 5 paw but just lovely) and Jack's (which isn't really WS anyway).
