Madikwe - Moderate Accomodation
Does anyone have any recommendations for moderately priced accomodations in Madikwe? We're looking for an en suite bathroom, so the Bush Camp is out. Is anyone familiar with Camp Mosela Sela? How is that? What about Buffalo Ridge? Also, if we don't want to fly, is it easy enough to drive ourselves there or do any of the lodges do transport from JNB? If anyone on here knows anything about Addo, that would be appreciated, too. Thanks!!!

I cant speak to moderate accomodation, we stayed at Makanyane which was wonderful and highly recommended. But the drive from Jo'burg is about three and half hours with a couple of rest stops. We had a car service take us, which worked out well. Saves on the hassle of renting a car, getting directions etc.

In another thread you said that the dogs in Madikwe do not have far to roam. Why is that? Fences, natural barriers?
When did you see the dogs and were they denning at that time?
Does Madikwe have a wild feeling about it or more of a managed property feel?

Your tarvel agent should be able to assist. Its simply a ground transfer. We have used Green Rhino transport in the past.

The park is 70000 hectares, of which most of the animals are concentrated in one half (there is a big range of hills splitting the park in two. 70000 ha would be considered smaller than a usual home range for a pack of dogs I believe, but becasue the predator prey relationships are being carefully managed, two packs are able to thrive here, with additional animals being translocated to other parks. So yes fences do play a part and the existence of food is the rest. The authorities seem to be really focused on not allowing Lion numbers to get to the level where they threaten the viability of the dog population.
We saw five dogs in February and they were not denning, true to form we saw them on our last drive. Of course when we arrived at Makanyane we were told that they had killed an impala right outside our room two days earlier!
Madikwe feels less wild, because there is habitation on surrounding hills, so you see lights at night when in the park. At Makanyane you did not though. which was nice. From that point of view it felt less wild than Botswana or even Sabi Sand. But the park is well managed, there is not much off roading allowed and they need many more roads to make it really good. But all in all, its a lovely spot, with good game, great birds and no malaria, which can be a consideration for some.
FInally I would say it would be a spot to consider for dogs particularly during denning. The rangers only have 40000 ha to search for the two dens, how hard could that be?
