I have been reading comments posted about tipping and would still appreciate some clarification. We will be spending 3 nights at Inyati and 2 nights at Mala Mala in March (so excited.... we can't wait!) But, we are still a little confused about tipping. For example, it is suggested to tip the ranger $15/day. Since we are a couple does this mean $30/day? Or does it mean $15 for both of us? Other than the ranger, what is the recommended amount to tip the trackers and porters? A driver will transfer us between the parks and this will be sort of a mini-safari. What would be the proper amount to tip this person? We also will have a guide for a day in Cape Town. What is going rate for tipping this person? We plan to convert U.S. dollars into Rand when we arrive in Johannesburg and will tip in the local currency. Thanks again everyone for your great advice.

I understand, for instance, that for a safari ranger, R100.00 (approximately $15.00 +/-) per day is the norm and R50.00 ($7.50 +/-) per day for the tracker. But, is that the amount to tip for both of us or per person? What about porters?

Those guidelines are per person. Have you checked with your travel agent? Mine provided suggested tipping amounts for everything from half/full day tours in Cape Town to the safari, but I unfortunately can no longer remember the amounts.

I use the same guidelines regardless where I am. The amounts you show are per person/daily; double for a couple.

Guide - $10/$15
Tracker - $7/$10
Staff - $5/$7 (this is shared between housekeeping, porters, waiters, etc.)
Half-day tours - $7/10
Full-day tour - $10/$12

Of course, if someone goes out of their way, you can tip separately/directly.

Also, tips/gratuities are based on service provided, so can be more or less.
