This is my first post on this site, but from what I have seen there is some great info. A little about me – I manage int’l operations for a large non-profit and travel to Africa/Asia frequently. In the last year I have been to Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand and I just returned from Uganda a month ago ( I highly recommend the class 5 whitewater rafting of the Nile headlands!). I usually travel alone and am an experienced traveler. When I have enough notice I always try to add some vacation time and explore the country I am in. I just found out I will be going to Tanzania in February – this is my first trip there. Our offices are in Dar es Salaam and I am definitely planning on visiting Zanzibar (probably a weekend trip between work). I have always wanted to see the great migration, although I have been told it is better/easier to do it from Kenya. I know there is fantastic wildlife in Tanzania and want to see some of it. The issue is that I do not yet know my dates – if my work will only take 2 weeks I can take another week for sightseeing, however if it is longer – like 3+ weeks I will have less time and may be looking at only a few days (after over 3 weeks I feel less like taking more time and homesickness has set in). So I am looking for suggestions on longer safaris – maybe 4 days and some as little as 2-3. or even something I could do on a weekend out of Dar. Any suggestions or contacts would be much appreciated!

During February the migration will be found in Tanzania, in the area of Ndutu which is on the Northern Circuit of parks. And, as this is a very busy season, at this time there is little, if any space available in that area.

DAR is in the south of Tanzania and ideal for a weekend trip over to Zanzibar. As to safari, if you wanted migration in the North, would entail a flight from DAR to Arusha/ARK or Kilimanjaro/JRO to meet up with safari provider to take you on safari and then flight back to DAR.

Or, you can consider one of the Southern parks as Selous or Ruaha, which though no migration... lots of game. Do know, however, February is "summer" in East Africa and these two areas can be not only hot, but very humid, without an air conditioner to be found. But most camps do have fans and nights/mornings tend to be cooler than daytime.

Once in DAR you can find a local tour outfitter (Takims Safaris at http://www.takimsholidays.com/ ) to arrange for you to fly to/from Selous for 3-4/days or combine with Ruaha for 3/days = total 1/week. There's a wide array of camps at both parks at different budgets.

I did a mobile safari in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti in Feb. of 2007 and we saw literally millions of wildebeest and zebra, along with the other animals. Sandi is correct about departing from Arusha or Kilimanjaro and then it will be a drive to get there. We also sent to Selous, which was much more hot and humid. Lots of animals in both places, much more shy in the Selous, but the migration in the Serengeti is something to see. Hopefully, you will be able to spend more than 2 or 3 days. Good luck!

I do agree with what Sandi says,In Feb it is he best time to visist Ndutu area and Serengeti,its just matter of your days you have, and also they are flight from Dar to Serengeti and after safari you may take another flight from Serengeti to Zanzibar,I have done safari in last year on September with Lillac adventures and safaris and we done 7 days safari at Serengeti and Ngorongoro.if you real need to get a good plans of your safari please you should deal with tour operetor before arrive at Tanzania.

thanks for all the info! i just found out my dates for work in Dar will be february 18th- march 4th. i am going to see if i can tack on a week before or after, although i may be too late at this point to get a tour of the great migration .
