Durban beachfront has a great flea-market on Sundays; you can get a variety of inexpensive souvenirs reflecting the Zulu culture. Great place to experience Durban culture too! I suggest you visit the flea-market and take a walk along the beachfront, watch the surfers ...

Here is some info on what NOT to bring back:

Even without porcupine quill necklaces and lampshades, the shopping is wonderful!

Thank you so much for posting the above link...

I am really disgusted by the amount of tourists that buy animal product souvniers... where do they really think those porcupine quills come from? Dead porcupines caught in hideous gin traps that's were.

Check out Heartworks on Kloof st and in the Gardens centre for lovely South African Craft. Carroll Boyes for cutlery etc in pewter and Monkeybiz for the beaded animals and dollies.

Great idea from mistypopper - I was trying to think of ideas apart from the usual wooden bowls/elephants etc and had forgotten one of my best buys: Carrol Boyes cutlery, it's something I use all the time and always reminds me of my travels, makes great gifts too. I got some from a shop at the V&A Waterfront but I've seen them in many stores.

On our first trip to SA, in 2004, we bought some sterling silver grapefruit spoons made by South African artist, Carrol Boyes. In 2012, we sought out (at some shop in Cape Town) some salad tongs as a wedding gift for a friend. She also makes a line of pottery, glassware and pewter things that are unique and wonderful souvenirs. I bought some more salad tongs again just this past May. Another wonderful (and packable) souvenir/gift has been some semi-flat woven basket-bowls that work perfectly as a spot to hold remote controls. Best purchased at a "market" where you see the lady making them on the spot

OH and my husband and his brother buy hats at the gift shops at safari camps we've stayed at. They LOVE the memories they bring back, even if they just wear them while mowing the lawn back at home!
