shark diving in Cape Town area

do you have to be certified to scuba to do cage diving or is there a way to do it via snuba or snorkel?

was it worth it?

Snorkel is OK. Yes, well worth it.

The tanks remain on the boat. You only use the mouthpiece and goggles when you get into the cage. Heavy wetsuit, of course... the water is very very cold. This ain't Hawaii or the Caribbean.

Some operators claim you need a Scuba certificate, but I didn't see them being asked for.

I didn't dive, partner did. It was a fun day! And three big Whites!

Does anyone have any comments on which shark companies to book through in Gansbaii? My husband and I are going to be making a day trip from our 4 full-day trip in Capetown to do the shark excursion and are concerned that the weather may keep us from going on on the boat. Any suggestions about booking the tour earlier on in our stay should it need to rescheduled---is it even possible to do that? This is one of the great highlights of our trip to South Africa and want to be sure that we have the very best experience. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that we will be going in early-August of 2008. We would like to go to Shark Alley/Dyer Island, as I believe this is the best place to see sharks at that time of year. I would like a tour company that has a larger boat (hubby gets seasick easily) and a smaller number of people as we most definitely want to go in the cage.
