Searching for Travel Writers on Africa
I'm taking a class at the local Community College in Travel Writing. Our assignment is to find travel writers on the web and who links to them. I'm having trouble. I was assigned Africa, of course!!!
There are lots of travel writers organizations, but those sites are so full of ads, I can't tell what's what. Any help would be welcome. Thanks ....

You mean living travel writers?
I find it tricky defining them, and the really good ones probably abhor being called travel writers. Redmond O'Hanlon, for instance, wrote a great book called "No Mercy" but I don't consider him just a travel writer. There's John Heminway, who written about Africa but I consider him more of a TV producer/docu maker. The recent "When a Crocodile Eats the Sun" by Peter Goodwin is a memoir about Zimbabwe, and some might put it it the travel category because it's such an evocative rendering of a place.
I imagine the best sources would be those sites selling books, like Amazon. There's also the American Society of Travel Writers (ASTA), whoses site may have links to (mostly) newspaper and magazine writers, some of whom have written about Africa. Or go to some of the magazine sites, like Conde Nast Traveler, search for Africa stories, then Google the authors.
Don't know if any of this helps...

Thanks,
Yes, it was an ambigous assignment. What is a travel writer? Who is a travel writer?? An author? A journalist? Are the No 1 Detective Agency books travel writing or pure fiction? I have no idea!!!! Still struggling,

See these links (I found through google +africa +travel +writing):

http://www.go2africa.com/africa-travel-articles

I also enjoyed recently these books (both I got through Amazon)
1. Ghosts of Tsavo: Stalking the Mystery Lions of East Africa, by Phillip Caputo (He's a novelist but this is a non fiction account of several trips he made to learn more about the lions.)
2. Malachite Lion: A Travel Adventure in Kenya, by Richard Modlin (He spent six weeks traveling in Kenya and wrote this account.)

Will be busy this weekend checking out all these links. Thanks a bunch.
I just got the Ghosts of Tsavo to read on my next trip. Just finished Brian Jackman's The Marsh Lions and also Roaring at the Dawn. Brilliant writer. Brian is a travel writer, but he has no website.
I would've loved to put the names of the books in bold, but how???

html formatting: use a carot (I think that's what it's called) this thing < then b for bold, i for italics, red for red u for underline and so on then the opposite carot >. Then the words you want formatted then you end the formatting by doing <forward slash i > so it looks like </i> or </b> for bold. Does that make sense?
Check this out

This is a good site with a lot of info if you're interested.

Interesting site Mom. Has a test page where you can practice.
Here's a test from me, see if it works -
<p><b>test of bold</b></p>
The HTML I used was -
I'm substituting # for the >
and $ for the <
otherwise it might simply repeat HTML translation - if it works!!
#p$#b$test of bold#/b$#/p$
Ok, so going to post it now. Would be nice to have a PREVIEW!!!
regards - tom

Well, worked sort of. But why the extra <p> on each side, should not be there. Help Mom!!!
Worked perfectly on the above web site practice page. Why not just "highlight" or "select" text and then hit the bold key. Why do we have to resort to arcane computer code? Reminds me of the internet days before browsers and we had to use UNIX commands like "get" and "put" to download stuff.
Oh, well, things are slow here and I'm bored. Sorry for the wasted space.

Still bored. And things slow here (in every sense of the word), have you noticed??
Sooooo, another test. (Blame it on Mom).
<b>test of bold</b>
This time above test format was-
(#for a <, and $ for a
#b$test of bold#/b$
Lets try italics-
<i>italic words</i>
HTML was #i$italic words#/i$
Need PREVIEW capability.
