Recommended non-luxury "budget" safari camps

I'm lucky enough to have my airfare from the US to Capetown paid for a business trip in June. As this is my second time to Capetown/South Africa, I would love to take a few days to the Eastern Cape for a true safari experience.

Looking at the recommended, popular camps listed here in Sabi Sands (MalaMala, Londozi), these are too expensive for me. I'm hoping to get some advice on the camps in Timbavati and Klaserie as they are noted as being much more reasonable in price on this forum. Camps mentioned here that are in a price range that I can afford are Simbavati, nThambo, Arathusa, Kings Camp.

Are any of these much better than the others? Or are there other camps to consider?

Take a look at Elephant Plains. It's in the same price range (and very near to) Arathusa. We stayed there in September 2012 and thought it was wonderful.

You might check out Shindzela Camp in Timbavati and Mohlabetsi Lodge in Balule (both are near Hoedspruit.) I've stayed at both and enjoyed them. Shindzela is at the southern end of Timbavati and Simbavati is towards the northern end.

This thread from 2011 contains some useful information, although pricing would need to be re-checked, http://www.fodors.com/community/afri...und-kruger.cfm

Happy planning,

nThambo in Klaserie is my absolute favorite in the whole Greater Kruger Area.

Another great lodge (in similar price range) is Simbavati River Lodge in Timbavati.

Good semi-walking camps are Shindzela (Timbavati) and Africa On Foot (Klaserie). But don't choose the latter if you already chose nThambo, as they are in the same area.

Note; semi walking = walk in the morning, drive in the afternoon.
