Question about checking luggage

Hi All. OK--here's a dumb question. I have never taken more than one airline to a destination. To get to Africa, we fly American Airlines from Sacramento to London and then British Airways from London to Nairobi.

When we check our bags in Sacramento, do they go all the way to Nairobi, or do we pick them up at baggage claim in London and re-check them with BA for the next leg of travel?

Thanks!
Jody

Assuming this is a single ticket, then when checking in at Sacramento, the agent should tag your bag thru to NBO. Do check the luggage tag that it shows the flight from Sacramento/London and London/Nairobi. And, the same on your return homebound.

No need to collect bags at London and recheck.

One more thing, do not check in luggage an electronic looking gadget, camera, binoculars, ipod, etc. Most likely your luggage will arrive a day later (if at all) and the item missing.

This is probably not the case for you but when we flew from BOS to LHR to NBO last summer, we had an overnight layover in Heathrow with a morning flight to NBO. In that case, we did pick up our luggage at LHR, stayed at an airport hotel and then checked in to NBO the next morning. It actually was not bad. We went in to London for dinner, got some shut eye and then on to NBO.
