There was a release of some of those mystery animals in the Namib-Rand around 2000. I think there were three, they promptly vanished and were not seen again except for one sighting two years later of a single animal. I was lucky enough to see one in the wild at Dora Nawas. The guide had been in the area for 2.5 years and it was only his third sighting.

kimburu - thank you so much for a beautifully written and intersting report. Three of your destinations are on our itinerary for our 2008 trip.
Okaukuejo, Okonjima Bush Camp,Bagatelle Game Ranch. So was VERY interested to read about these areas in particular. Etosha does sound a little challenging on the service/people/mobile phone front - good on you for focussing on the wildlife.

Your photos are stunning, it is vey exciting and helps "take us there".

I am sorry your trip report had to end!
We didn't know about the Meerkats and other habituated/tame animals at Bagatelle - something else to look forward to!

So, when's your next trip and where to?
Jude

Don't worry about Okaukuejo Jude. Forewarned is forearmed - and they may sort a few things out before you get there.... just be prepared for the number of people, the building work that may still be going on, and to be independent (there are cooking facilities and a kettle in the room and a barbecue area outside each room, so if you prepare to take advantage of that it might be more fun... we were only half prepared, and didn't have enough stuff with us for a barbecue. Most people really are very "well behaved" and there were only two people with mobile phones on at the waterhole - it's not "acceptable" - just that a few people are both really dumb and really self-centered. Anyway, the wildlife viewing is excellent ... and if you read other reports all over the Web, you'll see that mine is one of the more negative reports about Okaukuejo itself ... I suspect we were a little unlucky with our experience.

Next trip is to Kenya (Masaai Mara and Tsavo) and Tanzania (probably Tarangire or Selous and Ruaha ... but we have to cost it before since we are going to be there three weeks at peak season prices, and thesee things never end up as I originally planned them - still time to discover something else - like the Flycatchers trip to Katavi and Mahale) ... but not until September 2008 ...

Hi Paul,

thanks for an informative and entertaining trip report. Loved the photos as well. One day I may get to Hobatere and I think I will add two nights at Bagatelle at the end of my 2008 trip.

Cheers,

Pol

Na na na, na na. That is in reference to your Deliverance comment. It's the first couple banjo notes but loses something without audio.

Fred must have been a character and it appears you enjoyed his menagerie.

Great report that gave lots of helpful details for those of us hoping to visit Namibia.

Thanks for taking the time to share this.

Watch out for talk of what they are doing there pol .... and keep an eye on next door Intu Afrika too... I think there are "plans" for changes at both places - but nothing concrete...

"Deliverance" was probably unfair Lynn - just my luck if there is someone reading from the lovely town of Mariental... I'll be getting a telling off ;-)
