Morocco: where to park?

Have I got the wrong impression or is it inadviseable to stay in the medina of Moroccan cities if you have your own car? It sounds like the medinas are mostly car-free, so where do we park? Is it safe to leave the car behind? We will be in Tangier, Rabat, Meknes, Fez and Marrakesh. I definitely want to stay in the medina...but how? Thanks for your help!

Medina streets are definitely too narrow for cars and you won't be able to park your car easily.<BR>On top of that driving can be a bit hectic and crazy...

In Marrakesh there is a parking lot right outside the medina, in fact, there are probably several parking lots outside the different gates. You will get a parking ticket just like in US. Your hotel will tell you where to park. The hard part of driving for us in Morocco was finding our way once you get in the larger cities. We found the map hard to follow, not all street signs were in English. We hired a driver to take us around in Fez and Marrakesh. We just got lost several times in Rabat.Cost very little and he knew the way to go. He kept washing the car even tho it was a rental and we did not care if it was dusty. But our drivers wanted to drive a clean car.

Thanks for your answers. Since posting, I have made hotel reservations (budget to moderate) in the medinas and all of the hotels have assured me that there is parking close by and that we can drive fairly close to the hotel. One hotel said that we could leave the car in a guarded lot and that they would meet us there with a hand cart to transfer luggage. Sounds easy enough to me, but we'll see!
