Morocco April Itinerary 10 days

Need advise on itinierary
We will be traveling mid April with our two young kids, for 10 days.
Will rent a car, flying from NY - can fly either to Casablanca or Marraksh with a layover in casa.
Hoping to include Marraksh, Sahara (?), Fes, Essaouria
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I think it might be more useful if you dig in and come up with an itinerary you think you might like, then ask for suggestions. I will say that for just 10 days and children on your road trip, start by determining how much time you want to spend on each driving segment and how many NIGHTS at each destination to begin to know what to trim. You may find that combinations of public transportation (planes, trains, cars with drivers) will serve you better with so little time.

I agree with MmePerdu that we'd be able to provide better advice if you offer a starting itinerary. That said, your suggestions above look too busy for my tastes for just 10 days, especially with 2 young kids. With a late afternoon landing in Casa (which is what I did, traveling Minneapolis to Paris to Casa), you can see the incredible Hassan II mosque first thing that next morning and then get out of Dodge and train to Fes. 3 nights in Fes, followed by 3 nights in Marrakech, 2 nights in Essaouria and then your final night in either Casa or Marrakech, depending on your flight options back to the U.S. (Casa would give you a direct flight back to NYC. Doubt there is a direct from Marrakech.) I would skip the desert with your limited time. Too time consuming to get to and fro.

Fly direct into Casablanca from NY
Drive to Chefchouan for 1-2 nights
Drive to Fes for 2 night
Fes to Marrakech for 3 night
Head back to Casablanca and fly out to NY

Any thoughts about renting a car vs hiring a driver for the whole trip?

The easiest way to do this very straightforward trip is to take the train from the Casa airport via Casavoyageur station to Fes. Stay a night or 2 then hire a car & driver (grand taxi) to take you to Chefchaouen. A stop at the Roman site at Volubilis makes a nice break. Your Fes accommodation can arrange the car and pickup fot the return to Fes.

Train from Fes to Marrakech.

Train back to Casa for your return flight or fly back to Casa.

My practice has been to use the train where there are trains, buses where there aren't trains for short direct runs such as Marrakech to Essaouira and grand taxi when it makes sense for whatever reason. There are those here on Fodors who've rented cars and enjoyed driving themselves. I would simply never do it because I don't want the responsibility and bother of it for the usual reasons and because there are long stretches without services and language can be a problem in rural areas. I just don't want the hassle when public transport is cheap &easy, don't see the point. But it's personal preference of course.

Your itinerary looks perfect. Just make sure to visit the Hassan II mosque before leaving Casa.

If the perfect plan incudes driving themselves from Casa to Chefchaouen on arrival after a transatlantic flight, even knowing how much you love the mosque, MinnBeef, do you think they have time to stop?

Yes, absolutely. Probably on the front end, both possibly on the back end as well. With 10 days/9 nights, I'm assuming they will overnight in Casa on their arrival day. My Delta flight from Paris had me to my hotel by 5:00 p.m. Hit the mosque first thing in the a.m. (I got there at 8;00 a.m. and had the entire plaza to myself for a good 30 minutes before anyone else even arrived prior to the ticket window opening at 8:50.) Then spend two hours, pick up the rental car and I would guess it's a 6 hour drive to Chaouen. Arrive around 8:00 pm, have a late dinner and then tour Chaouen the next day and night.

Sounds good. I'd still be disinclined to drive, but that's me, drive enough when I'm home, glad to not have to when I travel. Trains tend not to get flat tires in the middle of nowhere. However they do it, I hope they love it as much as we do.
