My husband and I are looking for some beach time after our 8 day safari in Kenya. We have had mixed advice on whether to stay in Mombasa (Kenya) or go to Tanzania. Any suggestions would be appreciated - especially where to say. We are not quite budget travelers but I would like to avoid spending more than $350 a night at any beach resort.

The majority of good beach hotels in Mombasa are actually out of the city in an area called Nyali. This area is mostly upscale housing and beach front hotels. I dont think the beaches in this area are as good as Zanzibari beaches.

Although I love the Mombasa area, if your primary concern is the beach I would recommend the Zanzibar islands

Further north from Mombasa is an area called the Lamu Archipelago. It is an ancient Swahili enclave with great atmosphere and good beaches. It is more rustic and less touristy than either Mombasa or Zanzibar. It's worth a look but may not be what you are looking for. Personally it's one of my favorite places in the world.
