Thanks for the fare special info Patty. But we like to keep accruing our miles on Delta, so we can take another one of those long flights in business class, so we're committed to them!
We'll just keep watching the fares and see what we can get a good deal on. That will also play a big part on where we choose to go for the next trip.
aowens,
So neat to hear that you are also a parent of Kimana!!
We wondered how many people are adoptive parents...I'm guessing A LOT!!
Its great to get those e-mail updates from them and hear how he's doing!
Lynn,
Thanks for the compliments!
As for the collared lioness. That was in Tarangire. Oddly enough our guide didn't really say anything about it.
Sorry I don't have more info on that.
But thanks for the nice words

Great report and photos, have never been sure about Tanzania & Kenya as a destination before but you have certainly whetted the appetite and provided lots of information. Would particularly love to visit Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphanage, have heard so much about their work.

Patty,
They "had" free internet but it was so excruciatingly slow that it was basically unusable. When we asked them about it they said that it was due to problems with their provider.
We got the impression that this may be the case more often than not.
So, we watched a movie on our laptop instead.

Lisa I was following your R&N Explorer saga shortly before I left for my trip - it was like a bad soap opera, but I am very glad that despite that one hiccup, as frustrating as it must have been, you had a memorable trip.
I've finally been through your fabulous pictures - and now my dinner is cold They are amazing - the gorilla videos are especially fascinating - and yes the smile on your face *does* say it all. Wow. The gorilla trek has been on my to do list, maybe next year. When you say you wish you'd done another day of trekking, do you mean consecutive days - I really don't have an idea of how strenuous it is - I met a couple when I was in kenya who had just done a trek and it seemed like I'd need to be marathon fit to do it!
The gerenuk pictures are awesome - I saw only one pair my whole time, and they were quite far away. The dik dik are just great aren't they - those beautiful eyes. It was a while into my trip before I saw my first one and then they were everywhere.
I loved Tarangire as well - 3 nights was not enough.
Now off to read your tripadvisor reviews.
Cheers

Hi whiskey!
Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and words!
Sorry I made your dinner cold by having so many photos...it's just so hard to narrow them down.
To me they all tell the story of our trip to Africa!
I know it's too many for most people, but I do appreciate that you enjoyed them!!!!
As for multiple gorilla treks, I would want to do them on consecutive days.
Some groups live much lower on the mountain than others.
The group we saw was very close and the whole hike only took about 3 hours including our hour with the gorillas.
Some people actually request to go see the farthest group (Susa, I believe it is) because I think it is the largest group.
When you get to the park first thing in the morning you can put it your request for a particular group.
I don't think you are assured of getting it, but our impression was that they try to accommodate requests.
Some people had bad knees or didn't feel like they were the fittest people and they would request a close group.
So, if you did a closer group on the first day then your second day should be no problem.
There were some older folks with us and everyone did fine.
The guides will stop often and let people catch their breath.
I heard that most groups (except Susa) are seen within 4-6 hours total hiking time roundtrip.
Hope this info helps if you ever plan on going to trek the gorillas.
It is a most memorable experience and I can't recommend it highly enough!!
Thank again and
Happy, safe travels!
