Anything to do in Gaborone?

I'm still trying to work out the logistics on the Botswana portion of my trip. All of the J'Burg to Maun flights are sold out on the day I need to travel, so the travel agent is suggesting that we overnight in Gaborone instead of J'Burg on the way to Maun.

So my question is, is there anything to do in Gaborone for an afternoon/ evening? We'll get into Gaborone at about 3:30 pm or so, and will leave for Maun first thing in the morning. We'll probably be staying at some boring airport hotel.

Any suggestions for things to do?

Sure, visit Precious Ramotoswe on Zebra Drive. Check out the place and see where No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (book) takes place.

And hopefully, when you visit Precious, she'll have some of her famous pumpkin soup on hand to share with you. And some bush tea, too, of course!

Maybe I'd better read a couple of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books before this trip -- it sounds like the prospect of Gabarone wouldn't be such a bummer if I had some familiarity with Precious Ramotoswe! I'd have to talk my husband and daughter into reading them too . . . .

You could go to the mall, look for the shoe store and buy a pair of blue high-heels. You might just see Mma Kakutsi.

No idea about Gabarone - but, probably a good idea to get you at the earliest to your camp when you eventually get to Maun.

Alternatively, any thoughts of asking your agent to try to get you to your camp via Kasane? You will need to fly to Livingstone from JNB (lots of flights) and then, you can do the light aircraft transfer to Kasane and then onwards to your camp!

We shared a vehicle at Lebala in March with a couple that had spent a few nights in Gaborone on a No. 1 Ladies.... trip.

This had been booked through a UK based operator. If you're keen on that, I'll try and see what I can find.

Thanks; we probably wouldn't be interested in the tour since we haven't read the books, but others might be. It turns out we're going to be able to avoid Gaborone after all; the J-Burg to Maun flight opened up. But, as Hari says, for those who are sick of overnighting in J-Burg, Gaborone might be a good option; you do get into Maun (and therefore your camp) several hours earlier than you would coming from J-Burg.

And you have extra time built into your itinerary in case of Air Bots screw ups. Isabel you might have hit on something appealing to many of us who have suffered at the hands of Air Botch.

Just for the record, there is no airport hotel in Gaborone.
