Turkish Rugs
What is the definition of an Antique Turkish rug? Does anybody know? The type of rugs we like are older rugs made from hand spun and natural dyed wools--of the older variety. We do not want to end up in jail. Is a 100 year old rug considered antique? If we buy a rug out in the country it is not pratical to have a museum in Istabul determine if it is antique or not. If it is then we would have to leave it behind. Does anybody know how to avoid problems when leaving Turkey with older rugs?
Perhaps it is not a matter easily solved and it is best to forget buying any rugs while there.

I would contact the Turkish Consulate in your city (if you have one) or contact the Turkish Embassy in Washingto D.C. I would assume they would know. Also you could contact Customs at the airport that you will be arriving into ( the one where you will initially clear customs, your first port of entry into the US). Also contact a local rug dealer in your city. They are always familiar with Customs Regulations in other countries where they buy rugs. If all else fails play dumb. It usually works. Good Luck!

In answer to your questions regarding Antique Turkish Rugs. We are the owners of Indigo Gallery in Göreme, Turkey and have been dealing in Oriental Carpets for more than 20 years. (we are favourably mentioned in the Fodors Turkey Travel guide). Technically you cannot export or take our personally any TURKISH rugs 100 years or over in age. 100 years is considered antique. Many of our customers however purchase carpets of this age that originate in Aserbayan Afganistan etc and these are no problem as they are not Turkish.It is our experience that all carpets etc are not checked by Turksih Customs on departue as there is such a phenomonal tourist trade in carpets both old and new. However, if we despatch carpets on our customers behalf or for export, they are all checked by museum authorities and customs authorities. This is not required if you carry them personally in your luggage, however, if you as individuals were also to ship or air freight them from Turkey to your home country, you would also require museum certification and cutoms papers.
We have one of the better collections of new, semi antique and antique carpets in Turkey and deal both regionally and internationally with retail and wholesale trade.
We also sell to some 4,000 or more tourists to Turkey every year many of whom are also wishing to purchase a beautiful old handspun vegetable dye rug, so please do not be concerned about purchasing in Turkey.
