No sweat Laura, knew you were a diver (or learning anyway...)

Thanks again for all your help when we were planning the trip!

Heymo, you surely kept your promise and posted one of the best trip reports I've ever read!!! It was so useful and funny at the same time!

The only think is that now I want to do a lot of changes on my trip (I'm going for 10 days in December)and don't think I no longer can do it...

Can I ask you a couple of questions though???
a)Do you think it is possible to do the camel market and old cairo (mosques) on the same day?
b) I deeply regret the days I booked in Hurghada now, but from there, would it be possible to visit a Oasis?
c) I guess a day trip from Hurghada to Aswan is absolutely out of question, am I right???

Thanks in advance!
Juliana.

Juliana- sorry...just read this post. I would have answered much sooner!

1. I believe you can do the camel market and old Cairo on the same day. We went to the camel market early (7 am) and then went to Memphis and Saqqara, which are far removed from each other!
2. I don't have any information about going to an oasis from Hurghada. I do know our company offered a day out with a bedouin tribe(?) but we did not go.
3. Unless you flew from Hurghada to Aswan, it's impossible. It took us 5 hours to drive from Luxor to Hurghada alone! My suggestion with Hurghada if you like the water is to schedule a snorkel trip and just spend as much time on the beach as possible.

Hope you ahve a great time and I will be anxious to hear about your experience!

Have you ever heard of STI tours? Particularly a tour called "12 Day Egypt in Style." A friend wants me to join him on this tour and I know nothing about it or the tour company.
Thanks.
Judy

Heymo - Excdellent report! You say "Good thing we brought a jar of peanut butter and some granola bars with us…and a bottle of rum for good measure. That bottle of rum really came in handy from time to time-if either one of us was having trouble sleeping or for myself an alternative to drinking Egyptian wine" Did you buy the bottle of rum in Cairo or take it over? I would be afraid it would break as the suitcases were loaded and off loaded on the planes and busses. And I'm concerned about the bathrooms on the train's sleeping cars, what was your experience?

Annie - most liquor stores should have special boxes that you can use to put liquor/wine in checked luggage. We use them all the time. Nice thing is - they are already "in" the suitcase so you know how much room they take up - altho if you bring back wine (like we do) we have to consider weight.

On a recent trip to Cairo, I used a box to take some wine to a friend. On the way back I used the box to pack all my glass ornaments from the Khan.

Grcxx3, thank you. I did not know about these boxes for liqour. I am amazed. I shall go shopping. Great idea for storing breakables for the trip home, too!

JudySue -- In reply to your question about STI --
I'm hoping some others chime in with opinions on this company. There's not a lot here on Fodors about them - you might check on Frommers, I've seen a lot more posts over there and all of them are positive.

I've got a trip booked with them for the 12 days in Style you mentioned running this May. I'd love to hear if you get any other info that is good or bad about STI (my refund is returnable until early March).

One thing about them I really liked was that they guarantee a trip runs even if they only have 2 people signed up. I've run into a problem with another company that is waiting until the last minute for a trip to fill -- what a hassle that is.

Just to answer the question about the rum...

We brought it with us from home. You can get rum in plastic bottles, and it survived the trip with no trouble.

As to the bathroom on the sleeper train...

It's a regular toilet, which is nice. But when you flush it just dumps the waste onto the traintracks, which took some getting used to. My husband had more difficulty than I did- the motion of the train is not exactly conducive to good aim! I took Charmin travel rolls of TP, and I would HIGHLY recommend you do the same. They were a lifesaver- especially at those rest stops where someone has taken all the TP and will "give" you some- for a little baksheesh. I paid her the one pound, got my four squares of TP knowing fully well that I had more in my purse!

As for the peanut butter...I don't remember if we ever really needed it. I will tell you it was the one thing that got my luggage searched when we got back to the states...the dogs could smell it!
