Crassman,
I suppose I get what I pay for. I wont try another country until I’ve found a way to live in Kenya. I have met some really good Kenyan guides and some of them have even worked at the camp where I’ve been staying. Maybe solo travellers are assigned the not so good guides?
What I’m looking for in a guide is very good knowledge and skills and an ability to teach. Being attuned to the experiences of Western, English-speaking guests is less important, and not all guests have that kind of background – English is my third language for example. I even suspect it’s easier for a guide who has English as a third language to learn the languages of the guests than it is for a guide with English as his/her mother tongue. The all-white guides on Khakif’s are experts at all kind of things besides guiding and I’d feel a bit worthless and intimidated with a guide like that. Don Young even designs plush toys! One of their skills is obviously to know how to make a brand name of themselves.
Jackssid1, don’t mention that thread! My posts get removed when I do it.

Thank you, Nyamera, for your thoughts. My husband fought cancer over the past three years (and won the battle), but has now succumb to the ravages of various treatments. We are moving to Texas to be closer to his family. It is there I hope to enjoy a long & lovely “Indian Summer” with him before he leaves my world.
