"Driver" -- please explain
Hi all. This is my first post and I'm excited to have found this forum. I am beginning to plan a trip to Morocco (my first) and have lots of questions. First, though (I hope this doesn't sound too stupid), can you explain how it works to have a driver/guide for much or all of a trip? When you hire a driver to take you around Morocco, how does that work? Does he stay in the same hotel? Is he with you every minute when you're not on the road?
So many of you have raved about how much your driver/guide added to your experience but until I find myself in that situation, it sounds a little awkward to me.
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Our driver and guide in Cairo were with us during the day, taking us to various tourist spots. For lunch we sat by ourselves while the guide and driver sat together, taking a break of sorts. After returning us to our hotel in the evening they both returned to their respective homes. They would tell us exactly what time they would pick us up the next morning so we could plan our breakfast time and be standing in front of the hotel at the assigned time. Hope this helps.

Hi, L&P,
I'm imagining that you may've seen some of my posts as I recently returned from a 2-week trip in Morocco and had a lovely driver who had arranged for us by the the agent I was working with. I'm happy to provide more details about working with our driver (Salem - https://moroccan-family.com/) if you're interested -- you can click on my link to read my ongoing trip report or see some of my other comments. Feel free to message me as well.
We've traveled in India as well as Morocco with a driver, both times arranged by an agent. Both times, the arrangements for the driver were made by the agent and/or the driver. The driver may stay in a smaller room in the same accommodation or find other accommodation in the area. When we were staying near Salem's home, he slept there, but when we were traveling around the country, that's not always an option! On our recent trip to Morocco, when we arrived at the riad (hotel), Salem would check in with us and be available if we needed him. When traveling on the road, we always ate lunch together (we would pay, of course), and sometimes we would have dinner together, but it was really left up to us. Once our evening activities were over, Salem would drop us off at our accommodation and we'd see him the next morning to take off on our trip or see what we were planning. We had cell phones and would generally talk or text through WhatsApp (I never did get the regular texting coverage figured out). During long drives, Salem was great company; when we were staying somewhere for several days, we were on our own but had contact, as needed, with Salem. He coordinated a lot of our travel needs (the guides in Fes & Marrakech).
The drivers we've had were professional and are used to working with tourists, and know how to be available without being either too intrusive or too aloof. We felt very lucky with Salem, as he really became a friend after 2 weeks, and his companionship definitely added to our trip. But he was also discreet and left us on our own when appropriate. It would seem awkward, but it's really not. When we were in India, we also had a lovely driver - his English was not nearly as good as Salem's, and he was a much quieter sort, but he was also a good and professional driver, offering suggestions and being available as needed, without ever being intrusive.
I hope I've answered your questions. If you have any more, feel free to write here or message me.

With many of the agents, they will create a package which includes the accommodation and a driver. I found it difficult finding someone who was JUST a driver, but I decided I preferred to have the security of having an agent who provided the driver and accepted that they will provide the accommodation. The agent I worked with was flexible and accepted that I had already arranged a few places on my own.
In our case, I worked with an agent who arranged our driver, Salem, who has his own travel company (see my above post).
