Don't Forget Nairobi

A lot of people just pass through the city and miss some of the highlights...
I'm not keen on the city itself and try to stay somewhere like Westlands.

But the National Park is Great, Sheldrick Centre, The Giraffe Centre, Ngong House, The Animal Orphanage.... so much more!

Well I've just got back from a short trip.
A very short report here... http://spaces.msn.com/simonru/

Pumbavu,
The Nairobi rhino in the grass was very interesting. Did you see any lions in Nairobi NP?

On both of my trips to Kenya, I have allowed at least a day in Nairobi, and found many of the sites very interesting, except Nairobi NP, which on my last trip (August 2003) was practically empty of animals, and based on conversations with guides and others, I understand the decline was continuing. With so many great parks in Kenya, I would not recommend a visit to Nairobi NP, but I did enjoy the National Museum, Karen Blixen's home, Carnivore, the Giraffe Center and generally wandering around the city center (I found it safe).

Nyamera, no didn't see any lions this time. The grass was far too long. Saw plenty of buffalo, ostrich, rhino, gazelle but love the bird life in the park.

thit_cho. Nairobi Park is still one of the best places to see the Black Rhino. Some of the animals are in decline and it's sad... but you can still see plenty of wildlife, birds and animals. End of May was not a great time to go because of the length of the grass.. but still had a good day.

Great site. Loved the pic. of you scratching the cheetahs belly.

I agree that Nairobi is an under-rated place. We would have passed it by ourselves but ended up staying in the city after leaving Karen due to getting bumped from our flight to the Seychelles.
Nairobi's a great city with a good vibe. Too bad that all most folks see is the not so pretty ride to the airport which btw, I'm told that they are trying to make prettier.
Thanks for sharing;
Sherry

It may well be particulary good for black rhino (and I did see some on both trips), but that's due in part to the fact that rhino do not migrate over long distances, like the other animals that had populated Nairobi NP. Historically, the animals moved between Nairobi NP and regions south, as far, in some cases, as Amboseli, but with farms and villages increasing in the southern areas, the animals are not returning in large numbers to Nairobi NP. I think they should fence it and turn it into a large area for rare animals, like black rhino, and the should concentrate on conservation. As a typical national park, its unimpressive relative to the other great parks in Kenya. While I would spend another day in Nairobi when next I visit Kenya, but I will not visit Nairobi NP.
