We brought all 3 of your questionable items and used all 3. They take up little room and little weight and I say bring them. One item not on the packing lists that I saw that I highly suggest you bring is a small bottle of evian spray. On those dry, dusy, hot days there is nothing like it sprayed on your face, and yes, breathe in your nose to moisten those very dry nasal passages!

Sarvowinner, I love your suggestion to bring eyeglass shields! I immediately dug mine out of hiding and added them to my "packing pile".
I put some of those eyeglass cords on them so I can quickly pull them off and drop them onto my neck for photos. Also it means I don't have to wear sunglasses since my eyeshields are sunglasses and I can take pictures wearing my clear glasses.!
We leave for safari on Friday so your suggestion was timely. thanks!

Hat: Yes, especially if your sungalsses are the tiny sporty kind that allow a lot of sun in through the top. Also prevents the need to constantly hold your hand up to block the sun hat. Besides, a hat take sup minimal room in your baggage and you need not purchase an expensive Tilley hat.
Pocket Knife: Can't fathom what for unless you're an over eager Boy Scout/Girl Guide.
Tape: Yes if you're planning on buying a lot of fragile items that you can pack up in the few piece sof bubble wrap you brought along. Just take a bit and wrap it around a pen. Again minimla space taken up and your fragiles will get home safely. It's what I did.
Toiletries: Most places privde but take along travel size. I used the travel size for stopover at airports to freshen up. No need for large toothpaste, etc. in your carry-on. Grat too if your luggage gets misplaced.

Imavolio,
Hat--yes. Although I have to admit, on two trips I've brought two different hats and I rarely wore either. I hate hats!
Pocket knife--I don't travel with one. A guide, or while you're in town the local market, will probably have one if you absolutely need. Guides tends to have big knives, though.
Tape--I believe on one or both trips I used this for mosquito net holes (even small ones). I'm a little nutty about keeping mosquitoes away. I used the kind of tape that came in my little first aid kit, though.
I brought a small mag light on both trips. Never really needed it as there were always torches in my tent.
Have a GREAT trip.
