Commodore Hotel or Ambassador Hotel (Cape Town)
We can not decide in Cape Town between Commodore Hotel by the waterfront or Ambassador Hotel in Bantry Bay area. We are going to be in Cape Town four nights (three days) and most of our days will be filled with guided tours of the city, peninsual and winelands. Does anyone have any recommendations. How important is location in the waterfront?

Our friends stayed at the Commodore where we visited them. The hotel's public space was lovely and though the rooms somewhat smaller than those at the Cape Grace where we stayed, they were more than ample. Staf was wonderful.
The hotel is 1/block from the V&A Waterfront with shops, restaurants, etc. Ideal location and perfectly safe.

We stayed at the Cape Grace on our first visit in 2003 and at the Commodore in 2006. We enjoyed both - great hotels, easy access to the waterfront, helpful staff. I would say that the Cape Grace is a notch up from the Commodore - but as the kids grew.....so did our need for 2 rooms!!!!
We love the V&A waterfront and so we like to "base" ourselves there.

We stayed at the Commodore Hotel
in September, 2006. It was a lovely
hotel 1 1/2 blocks from the V & A
waterfront. Great location, very
nice buffet breakfast plus additional foods cooked to order, pretty lounge seating area and nice
restaurant. AND a gorgeous view of
Table Mountain. The staff was great
and we would definitely return. The
location was terrific.

the location of the Ambassador is lovely and on the sea. If you are going in summertime however, the road gets very busy and there is also a lot of construction work in the area.
I would choose the Commodore, for no other reason than I find the Ambassadors rooms very small and the road outside too busy.

yankee95,
I want to second what Poppins has advised in that the Ambassador's rooms are small, parking is at a premium but most important is that there is a lot of building going on around the hotel at present and that means noise, noise, noise.
The Commodore on the other hand is very comfortable, has a nice atmosphere, is well located and offers great service.
I would definitely opt for the Commodore.
Enjoy your stay in our city when you visit us.
