Hi XYZ,

How exciting you have a trip to South Africa coming up.

Though I have not been there, St. Lucia comes to mind when you say birds, lots of water, and $500 pp/pn or less.

And it's not far from Phinda, which seems to be of interest as your post progresses. Phinda can help you with transfers. You mentioned using an agent. They can help you too unless you'd like to drive yourself. Then they can help with car rental.

I just got back from my 2nd visit to Phinda. Sept used to be discount time for Phinda (as was early Dec), but I just visited their site and it doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Maybe prices change and reduce as the year progresses.

Your posts seemed to evolve into animals taking priority over birds. Not sure where the hippos are ranking in your plans now. Phinda is not a first choice for hippos, although there are some. Sept is not the best month for abundant hippo habitat in Phinda.

I thought I saw a Phinda/Mala Mala combo being discussed above. I did that exact combo and it was ideal, especially if you like spotted cats. Sabi Sands is noted for leopard and Phinda is noted for cheetah. I think Mala Mala is over $500 pp/pn now, though. Lots of other good Sabi Sands recommendations where leopard are likely.

After you HAVE gone to Africa, the entire world may be a little less of a problem for you. But getting rich and retiring early is always a good approach.

scootr,
I'm confused about Mashatu, in a different post you said

scootr29 on Mar 1, 12 at 1:20pm Hello...I did MalaMala back in 2007 (so long ago). We would not go back. Mashatu on the other hand was a blast.

I was making a joke....we do not want too many people to know about Mashatu...it is a very cool place and was my first experience of Africa...it will always have a place in my heart. Do not hesitate to go...it will be a 180 degree different experience than MalaMala.

The Land of the Giants......
