If you type in the search box safety + Egypt you will get the hundreds of opinions on this subject - and they are only opinions. Statistically, it is safe. But if fear will prevent you from having a good time, pick another destination.

The only time I ever felt uncomfortable is on arrival/departure - especially at the domestic airport and also in Luxor - entirely too many people wanting to carry our luggage in exchange for a tip. The people selling souvenirs can also be somewhat aggressive, and often follow up. Just keep repeating a firm "la la la" (Arabic for "no, no, no" and they eventually leave you alone.
