back from namibia
We've just returned from our 3 week trip to namibia/jnb. We were on WS spirit of the namib 11 day tour. There were 5 of us.. my husband, me, our daughter (who lives in northern namibia), a woman from NY(who has been on lots of safaris)and frederico, from Italy. We became a tight little group.
Our guide, Douw, was incredible, able to spot the smallest of sights while driving at a speedy rate. And be willing to stop/reverse/ or do whatever he needed to do to make sure we didn't miss anything.
The trip included a lot of driving...some days that was all we did. But, having said that, our days were full of interesting sights and the drives were never boring. If we hadn't been on one of our marathon drives, we would never have seen...black rhino sex! :0
More to come, still a little laggy..

Our trip started out great...we got an upgrade to Ongava Tented (instead of the "Homestead". First night, we heard our 1st lion roar..right outside our tent. (We saw the tracks in the morning.) A great start to our trip.
Our little group was merging well. Two nites at Ongava..got our feet wet at Etosha.Zebras/eles/rhino/every type of antelope.
Another upgrade to Palmwag Lodge..instead of WS "adventurer camp"...(dome tents/shared BR.)We spent our days in the dry riverbeds/looking for the desert elephants. Our guides, Douw and Rosie, knew them by name...we had our first mock charge/trumpeting by Old Crinkletail. (It didn't look mock to me!)The next day..a very long driving day, held a surprise..black rhinos mating! It was only the 2nd time Douw had seen it. There was also a young rhino with them. We stood transfixed for at least a half hour. Douw was very clear with our instructions after he checked the wind direction. "Be very quiet/don't move."
If we hadn't been driving to this extremely remote camp.. Hunkab.. (it was moved after we gave our trip evaluations) we never would have seen the rhinos. More to come..
