Hi Alice - I'm planning my first trip to Cairo for this October. Will be traveling alone, not with a group. Is it possible to get to Luxor and other sites along the Nile without having to join up with a tour group? Can one purchase "tours" or "trips" to these sites after arrival in Cairo? I prefer to see things on my own, at my own pace, without being part of a tour group "herd," although I recognize having a tour guide does offer advantages. Still, I prefer making my own "discoveries." Thanks! Would love to get your e-mails re. your trip to Egypt! Thanks!

Richard, As to your question on travelling independently, I know from experience it is very easy to do in Cairo and if you want to travel to Alexandria. And you won't have any problems getting to Luxor (either by the overnight train or plane) and hiring a guide or just having a taxi take you to the different sites. I just don't know if you can proceed further south on the Nile without joining up with a Nile cruise tour. Now you can certainly continue south by train BUT I would highly recommend going by boat to Aswan.
There are MANY tour companies in Cairo that can arrange your Nile cruise, but I just don't know anything about them to make a recommendation. The Tour Egypt web site may be able to help you out (www.touregypt.net I think but check my notes for sure).

Ashley, I'll send my notes to you but to get specific information on airfares I would check out Expedia or Best Fares. As to accommodations, a copy of Lonely Planets' Egypt guide would be a great help or go to the Tour Egypt web site for their recommodations.

To all, I will have the notes out tonight.

Best Regards, Alice

Alice - I will be travelling to Cairo and Giza with my wife and two teenage boys for a four day break in August (I know it will be hot!). I would really appreciate a copy of your emails to help us make the most of such a short stay (one night in Cairo followed by three nights in Giza).

Thanks
