Any thoughts on the Breakwater Lodge?
It would appear to be a reasonably priced alternative on the Waterfront. We don't need luxury but would like a safe, well-located hotel. What other areas of Cape Town should we explore for accomodation? We will have a car. We are very open to guest houses. Would like to spend around $100 USD/night. Thanks.

SHaglna,
The Breakwater Lodge used to be a prison
so prepare to want to stay in a place where most of the the rooms are the slightly larger than the size of prison cells. In actual fact I would classify the Lodge as a classy backpacker establishment.
Before I tell you about other places are you speaking of $100 per room or $100 per person?

Shanglan,
I just read on flyertalk that the Holiday Inn on Strand St has a really good rate of around $50 per room per night. I have not stayed here but it used to be an Intercontinental before becoing a Holiday Inn I think about a year back. I have been inside and it is very nice. The location isn't great as its right downtown which can get a little rough at night but I think they have a free shuttle to the waterfront. I'd definitely consider it.

Shanglan,
Not knowing when you are going or for how long, I just punched in 4 nights for mid-September, and these are the results from www.expedia.com
http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll...&rfrr=-905
(copy and paste above link)
There are quite a few nice places that are available for just a bit more than the Breakwater Lodge. For its 2* level, the Breakwater Lodge does not appear to offer the best value, at least not on Expedia where it is listed as $120 per night.
Here are the average nightly rates for some other Cape Town hotels, as shown on Expedia:
Mount Nelson Hotel - $157
The Commodore (4* hotel, waterfront border) - $164
Ambassador Hotel - $92 for a 1 bedroom suite in what is listed as 3.5* hotel in Bantry Bay
So, as you can see there are some much better hotel choices out there that will not break the bank.

Shanglan,
I would suggest that you take a look at the following guesthouses as a good option relative to your needs of
1. Safety
2. Price
3. Location
4. Clean and well appointed place to stay.
Albatross Guesthouse
--------------------

Best value for money amongst all the suggestions that I am making in this mail. Excellent host and very well run. Location is reasonable.
Cape Standard
-------------

Excellent value for money. Different sort of venue. Good location and safe
Davids
------

Great value for money. Well run guesthouse. Well located
Craigrownie
-----------
http://www.craigrowniehse.co.za/
Near to sea, well appointed, free internet, great breakfast.
All the above places fit the bill of the 4 criteria that I have mentioned
and will all give you a much more local experience than a hotel. Parking is available at all the venues too. Also remember that hotels generally do not include breakfasts in their rates while all the guesthouses do.
Hope the above helps.
