The road between Nakuru and Naivasha is indeed horrendous. It sounds like you have a good plan, flying up to Nakuru first and spending 2 nights at Loldia. So I take it the announced renovations at ACC haven't materialized yet? Please report back on Larsens. We're staying there in December. I'm curious who you booked through and who your guide is. It sounds like he lives outside the country. Will he accompany you in both Kenya and Tanzania?

hi Amy
from Nakuru u can go north to Lake Baringo - a freshwater lake as an alternative to Naivasha.. e.g. Islamd Camp - u can take a boat, watch birds ; visit Ilchamus called "njemps" in tourist brochures).
from Baringo u can drive to Samburu through Pokot land and see the most traditional tribe - women still wear leather skirts, men still have painted mud caps. This is ascenic road with amazing observation over rift valley...

Hi Patty-
We will report back on Larsen's (and everywhere else!). As to ACC, I think it is only the Ark that has reported that renovations are complete, so we shall see if that is indeed true.

We are going with Explorer's World Travel http://www.ewtravel.com/
They have operations in US and London and we will indeed have a guide that will stay with us for both the Kenya and Tanzanian portions of the trip. We know several families that have gone with the same guide (Jim Heck) and all had great experiences.
I was out horseback riding yesterday and realized that one reason I am so happy to go back to the original itinerary is the opportunity to ride among the animals(if only for a few hours) at Loldia.

Amy.. You are still driving straight into the Ark - without visiting ACC, right? And then they'll let you drive out again?

I'm interested because this would mean that the Ark could effectively be used as a normal lodge in Aberdare NP - I had always understood they didn't want people driving in and out....

Have a good time.

Kimburu-
Yes, we go straight to the Ark without the stop and transfer at ACC. I specifically asked about this because I too thought it was not possible but was told that for our small group there would be no transfering of bags etc and that we would be able to go in and out of the Ark. Final payment this weekend!
