They really like when you try to speak Swahili. I also found myself looking in my dictionary when my guide was talking to other guides. The guides often would stop and talk about what they had seen in different places, so I enjoyed trying to do some translating on my own.

We hardly used the English dictionary at all while we were there. Our guide spoke perfect and most of the workers at lodges also speak excellent English.

However, we visited a Maasai village (Ngorongoro Area) where only two Maasai there at the village spoke English and they speak well. However, they recognized very limited English written words and can't write much.

One was a teenager that was also teaching the other kids there English at their "school" (it's a blackboard under an acacia tree). So I gave him our dictionaries and he was very excited as he can learn more English words and help the other kids learn more as well.
