I know this will sound pretty lame, but I wanted to know if it is possible to walk across the border into Slovenia or Croatia. We'd love to "pop in" to Slovenia on our way from Venice back to our hotel in Austria. Our route will take us near the border, but our car rental company will not allow us to drive into either of these countries. Can anyone suggest a good "jumping off" place for a quick daytrip to Slovenia and possibly Rijeka in Croatia? It would be a shame to be so close and not even enter these countries. I know one day would not do either justice. Are there any convenient places to park on the Italian side and then walk across the border? Is this even possible? Any info on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Based on very limited experience, I would suggest you find a bus from a nearby town either in Italy or Austria and use it as a way to visit Slovenia or the Istrian peninsula in Croatia. Lots of people have posted on busses from Italy to Trieste, for example, on this list.

The border crossings we used were not located in attractive areas, and since they are non-EU crossings, border controls were tighter than I had anticipated, particularly between Slovenia and Croatia.

If you want to walk across the border, you can. They'll check your passport and let you through. I did it once when returning to Italy: I took a taxi to the border, then walked across; there was no public transport on the other side, so I thumbed a lift into Trieste. The border crossings are generally in the middle of nowhere, so you may find nothing to do on the other side. I'd suggest getting a bus from Trieste to Koper in Slovenia, about the nearest town of interest. They're fairly frequent, and the journey's less than an hour.

Although i am doing it in reverse, renting a car in Croatia and taking it to Trieste and Slovenia (returning it to Croatia), I cannot believe your car company won't let you do it. I suggest you call them by phone and get them to state their rules, and have them follow it up with an email when you find they will let you. I usually rent from AutoEurope and sometimes their web site says no because "one size fits all" but when you call, they can find you a company that lets you take it across borders. I have settled on National, through AutoEurope. They are even letting me take the car into Bosnia! Recall or rethink the car rental company.
