There were lots of replies for a similar thread on a wedding in France, so I'm trying this question. What do guests wear? Do women wear black, or is this a no-no?

We'll be going to a wedding in Lithuania in July. Ceremony is in the church in a large city, followed by an all night reception at a more casual resort type place on a lake. I'm struggling with what to wear.

Okay. I've asked within the family. The response I get is that this isn't about clothes; wear what you'd like. I certainly know what is considered more "appropriate" here in the US. But, in a different culture, I don't know. But, I'd still like some feedback if anyone has any. The French thread was fascinating.

No, Poland isn't in the Baltics, but it is adjacent and has a history that is intertwined in many ways with that of Lithuania. So, I think there may be some commonalities.

In Poland where most is Catholic black is worn to funerals... but Lithuania is not mostly Catholic so this being a church wedding be best to ask as you did people that you be visiting... In either case I would take my chances with anything other then black for such a happy occassion.

I visited some friends in Lithuania a few months ago and went thru their wedding pictures. It appeared that appropriate dress in the US would be appropriate there. Keep in mind that it is cool in Lithuania, so I would make sure that whatever you wear, you can put on a sweather or jacket for the reception. I will be going back in June, and just checked the average temperatures -- the hi averages 70 degrees.

Their wedding reception was on a lake as well -- in Trakai. If this is where you are headed, it's great setting. Of course, I am sure wherever it is, it will be great.

julies, while I think black is perfect for most travel I too would shy away from wearing it to a wedding where you are one of the Most Important Persons.

I would take a cue from the French weddings. You may even find you will need to go the whole route, suit (ensemble) for the ceremony and then something more cocktail attire for the evening.

If you looked at the pictures ggreen provided on the French wedding thread I don't remember seeing much black. If the party is on a lake will most of the time be outdoors??---then you might want to think Minnesota lakes---cool once the sun sets; hopefully without the mosquitoes Deborah

I knew I'd get some help here on this one. thanks loads. Yes, I took a long hard look at those French wedding pictures and all the women were very colorful, so I think the idea of black is out. I'm also thinking that I will need a dress with a jacket or shawl of some sort for the evening and I'm also guessing the gothic era church will probably be pretty cool during the ceremony itself. Now all I have to do is find the outfit that is nice and will pack fairly easily. No small challenge in itself.

We attended a cousin's wedding in eastern Slovakia over Labor Day weekend.

Both the bride and groom were from small, farming villages in the countryside. The wedding was at 3:00pm in church, and was followed by a reception that ended at 6:00am the next morning. (The Slovaks know how to party!!)

As a fashion-statement, I don't know if the location would make a difference or not. (Larger city as compared to a small village.)

I looked at the wedding video, and other than several elderly &quot;grandmothers&quot; and a few teenagers in &quot;slinky&quot; dresses, no one else was dressed in black.

There were above-the-knee, below-the-knee, and mostly mid-calf &quot;fancy&quot; dresses on most female attendees.

I would stay away from black---and probably go with the mid-calf length, and wear your &quot;dancing shoes.!!

I've been to weddings in Poland. I would wear something similar to what you would wear at a US wedding, but perhaps stray from the black just in case. It's better to stray if you're not sure. Have fun! I'm sure you'll enjoy the difference in wedding customs.

So definitly do not wear black ;-) black color is for funerals... and that may give you looks to make you feel out of place ;-)

Wedding garb. Men, a suit and necktie; women, a colored dress, heels and a hat. Party garb. Men, a suit and necktie..after an hour or so, hang up the coat and take off the tie. Women, the same dress, more comfortable shoes and no hat. There will be hours of sitting eating and drinking and probably no air conditioning,dancing is continuous; dress appropriately. All of the local guests will be wearing their best!

Black, Husbands die first. The widow and close family females wear black for one year! Some males may wear a black armband for a short time.
