Hi! I'm taking kids (ages 9, 15 and 15) to D.C. this weekend to see the museums. We will be staying at Holiday Inn Select on King Street as I had a coupon for a free night's lodging there. Can anyone recommend any inexpensive places to get breakfast or dinner near Old Town (chains are fine!) I really have to watch my dollars right now due to a job situation (or "un-situation" actually) but don't want the kids to go hungry - thank you!!

For breakfast, try La Madeleine (next to your hotel) for coffee, pastries, breads and some more substantial omelet dishes. Also up King St. at the intersection of King/Washington is a Cosi (all day cafe, good coffee and all sorts of things served on their signature flatbread)

For dinner, there's a Chiptole within spitting distance of your hotel on King Street. Also within easy walking distance (inexpensive but not dirt cheap) are King Street Blues (BBQ, 112 N. St. Asaph), Austin Grill (tex mex, 801 King St), and Union Street Pub (121 Union St.). A slightly longer walk to S. Washington St. will find Southside 815 (southern, 815 S. Wash) and a couple of doors down is Facia Luna (great pizza and pasta)

I'm assuming you'll have a car and if you don't mind a short (but ususally congested) trip up Duke Street, you'll find Generous George Pizza at 3006 Duke. It's very popular with families, noisy and casual. Great pizza and pasta. Large portions. Definitely the best value for the money.

Also, if you want to do take away or a picnic in the room, there's a great selection of sandwiches and prepared foods at Sutton Gourmet (600 Frankline St, south end of town). There is a Giant supermarket at the north end of town on St. Asaph, I think. Also a Trader Joe's (612 N. St Asaph).

I have just made a reservation at this hotel for October 21 and was told they have a complimentary breakfast, but maybe your coupon excludes this.

Thanks! I called the hotel and they do have free coffee, juice and pastries in the a.m. which will be great. I think we'll try that pizza place too. Thanks for the help!

You're staying at a wonderful location for kids. I've stayed in that area with kids a number of times. I would suggest eating at the Hard Times Cafe at 1404 King Street. It is a wonderful place that is frequented mostly by locals. It is very teenager-friendly. In fact, they'll love the neat stuff all over the walls. It is also extremely easy on the wallet.

The restaurant is an American type of food place that specializes in different types of chili. They have, if I recall, Texas, vegetarian, Cincinnati-style and something called Terlingua Red Chili, which is another type of Texas chili.

I just looked up the web site for you through Google. Go there and hit the Menu icon on the left of the screen. I'm getting hungry just looking at it! Here's the website:
