My husband and I want to take advantage of the great deal at the Galleria Park Hotel, located on Sutter in the Financial District near Union Square. Have you ever stayed there? What's the neighborhood like?

The Galleria Park is on Sutter near Kearny Street. I think this is a fine location. You are on the edge of the Financial District, within easy walking distance of Union Square, and a short bus ride or 15-min walk to Chinatown and North Beach. I used to work about a block away, on Montgomery Street. There are a lot of lunch-type places to eat in the neighborhood. For dinner, walk a couple of blocks to Belden Lane - it's a little pedestrian-only street chock-full of good restaurants. Try Plouf for seafood, Tiramisu for great Italian food.
You'll also be up the street from the Crocker Galleria, which has some upscale shops, places for coffee, and restaurants.

I always get lost in SFO but I remember having a fantastic lunch not far from the Galleria Park.It was the Tadich Grill(I have seen it spelled with AND without the 's').Its on California St very old world American solid woods and big mirrors/brass/etc.Have to do lunch there and go early.Many lunchers stand at the bar.Cant do dindin cuz they shut down at 8pm.Also, more of a walk to the Palace Hotel and their Sunday Brunch if you can do it timewise.Has to be the best on the planet.

Susan, If the great deal you're talking about is the "Pay the Year You Were Born" deal, you might be out of luck.

There was another thread on here last week where someone said (at that time) that they'd called and found out that the hotel was completely booked up for every weekend (and possibly weekdays, too--can't remember) except the weekend before Thanksgiving for the duration of this deal. The hotel had been inundated with reservation requests since news of the deal was published in several major newspapers a few weeks ago.

If it's some other deal you're talking about, never mind...

Can't comment on the accomodations, I walk past it every day on the way to work and it looks very nice. Has a garage (expensive) and a very nice doorman. The neighorhood is fine, clean and safe since it is the financial district, within easy walking distant(2-3 blocks) of Union Square and many other downtown locations including Chinatown, SFMOMA. As previous poster has stated there are numerous lunch time eating establishments in the area and it is a very busy area during the day. Since it is closer to Union Square than other parts of the financial district it is not as "dead" at night, i.e. there are plently of restaurants nearby including the highly recommended Plouf. FYI since we are talking SF here, there are very few panhandlers and homeless types in this area. Just in case that was a concern.

I have stayed at the Galleria Park Hotel and highly recommend it, especially for the price. The common areas are very nice and the rooms are well decorated, if a bit small (the hotel borders on the historic and rooms were smaller back then). One thing that really made an impression was the accoutrements like good shampoo and bubble bath. I hate when hotels get cheap on those things!
