All kidding aside, the western portion of N.D. which includes Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park and the badlands is beautiful. Many think the area is better than Sedona or the Grand Canyon. Medora is an old West style town and they put on a fabulous musical in a huge outdoor ampitheater nigtly in the summer.

Graeme, if you are going to or from North Dakota via intersate 94 and passing through western Minnesota call me at 998-3932 at the intersection of 210. You can use that beer test you talked about in another post! I'll meet you at a place at the intersention called Hero's. You can tell me about Austrailia. I want to go there sometime soon.

Years ago I'd read a statistic that North Dakota is the LEAST visited state among the 50. I don't have a clue what are their "must see's" ~ just thought I'd toss out that useless tidbit of info. I'd opt for South Dakota (Mount Rushmore / Black Hills) if that's part of your driving expedition.

North Dakota is such an uninviting place to live that (surprise!) very few people do so. To me, that was one of the attractions of visiting there. As noted above, Theodore Roosevelt Nat Park is every bit as stunning as Badlands National Park, but with a LOT less crowds and a more wildlife. To me, it's more fun to be stuck behind thirty bison crossing the road then thirty noisy tourists!
If interested in the Lewis & Clark expedition or the fur trade of the 1800s, North Dakota has several sites of historic interest.
I don't recommend ND for those who want noise and activity while they travel. For getting away into the wilderness, however, it does have its charms.

The only reason I have ever heard of anyone going to ND is if they have relatives there they need to visit - or if they are on a mission to see all 50 states. My grandparents were born and raised there. They moved to CA in the 50s and we are all very glad that they did.

Graeme: Teddy Roosevelt National Park, the Badlands, Medora AND (are you ready for this?) the Monument that marks the geographical center of the North American Continent. That's it. Had to travel through North Dakota many years ago as part of project to do all 50. Camped at Fort Stevenson which is in a State Park. Funny story. The fort was built to protect three friendly, small Indian Tribes referred to as the Three Affiliated Tribes from the Sioux. Turns out the three tribes had to consistantly defend the Fort from the Sioux.
There are a number of parks, lakes and lots of prarie animals and birds. The pumping station at Garrison Dam is interesting (we are reaching here). But, North Dakota is not a destination. Just a place to find something of interest if you have to pass through.

From someone who has been born and raised in North Dakota your comments are very unappreciated. Our state may not be the biggest or busiest, but we love it. I could never imagine living anywhere else. We have low crime, friendly people and neighbors who still care about you. Every night when I watch the national news I feel very grateful to call North Dakota my home. There are wonderful places to visit and see in North Dakota. I wonder how many of you that responded have ever visited here?

Visit www.ndtourism.com
My personal favorites are Medora and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. try the horsebackriding. Make sure to take in the Medora Musical in the evening also. International Peace Gardens is beautiful in the summer with the flowers blooming. Lake Metigoshe State Park is a wonderful place to camp. Lake Sakakawea has great fishing. There are many more wonderful things to do in ND. It isn't a place to visit if you have to be constantly entertained, but a great place to come if you want to get away it all and enjoy some peace and quiet.
