We will be in San Diego the last two weeks of August. There will be four adults in our party and we have never been to SD. Please give us a list of places we should not miss. Sights, restaurants (moderate prices) and activities. Thank you.

Dare I ask why San Diego was picked when there are so many other cooler (literally and figuratively) places to go in SOCAL?
Will you have a rental car?
There are several Amtrak Surfliner trains between San Diego and LAX and even Santa Barbara every day.

Daily temperature in Southern California is much more dependent on how far inland you are than how far north you are.

Personally I enjoy Torrey Pines State Park, the zoo, the Midway, Spanish Village/Balboa Park, La Jolla Village and the State historic park. Not really that interested in the downtown/Gaslamp district. But you haven't given any indication about your own interests so who knows if they are best for you.

Can't think of a single moderately priced restaurant that I'd recommend.

the beaches on Coronado are great (incredibly white) and it is interesting to walk thru the Hotel Del Coronado. YOu canalso pickup a walking guide to some old homes in Coronado... Ball game at Petco Park? Bike riding plus those things named above.... 2 weeks in my opinion is a lot for just San Diego, you might try taking the train up the coast or renting a car and driving over to over to Safari Park in escondido? there are some moderate price restaurants in the gas Lamp district and some very low key places close to the ball park.

Agree USS Midway is well worth a visit. On our first visit to San Diego we enjoyed the trolley ride which goes by all the major attractions and over to Coronado.

Do you have your lodging sorted? If not come back with your budget and any hotels you are thinking of for opinions etc.

Looking forward to our next visit which begins this Thursday. You will have a fabulous time in San Diego one of my favorite places.

San Diego in August is a great time to visit. The weather is nice (it will be warmer than normal but most people vacation close to the beach) and sunny. There are a lot of activities such as the USS Midway and Coronado that others have mentioned. There is the SD Zoo and Wild Animal Park in Escondido, the Birch Aquarium (La Jolla), Balboa Park with lots of museums and art galleries & the Old Globe Theatre, the downtown area has historic walks, the Embarcadero (where you can take day trips to view the harbor), Pt. Loma has the famous lighthouse, Old Town with historic buildings and great Mexican restaurants, La Jolla has lots of nice beaches (La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove, Windansea, etc), ...

One thought is the last two weeks in August (no matter where you travel probably) is generally a busy tourist time. If you can do your trip the first two weeks in Sept you'll have the same nice weather, but not as many people and crowds. Just a thought.
