Not sure if it is half way, but we did an easy drive from Camolgi to Bellagio.

But there is probably a more direct way from Sienna.

The answer is the Ligurian coast---Italian Riviera.

The real quesiton is which location. I would look at Portovenere, Lerici, and Camogli---check them out on Google.
But, you do not say when. If winter, consider Parma.

Liguran coast (as suggested above) is fine for countryside. If you prefer towns, you may check Lucca, Florence, Parma, Cremona, Bergamo, Pavia, Certosa di Pavia, Milan.

Thank you all.
Last trip to Italy, 9 years ago, we went to San Remo between Siena and Bellagio. It was not our cup of tea... So thought we would pass on the coastal area....mistake to not try again....?
I am hoping to have a plan that makes sense drive wise....was thinking of the two days in San Casciano but the villa Il Poggiale we had stayed at in the past isn't available for the dates we need (6/26-6/28/2014). Any suggestions in that area? Or...
Was thinking our start with 4 days in Rome and end 3 days in Venice was enough city for us....
Maybe this additional info will help. We are flying into Rome 6/20 4 nights, Siena 2 nights....X...for two nights, then Bellagio 3 nights...Venice 3 nights.
Picking up the car on our way out of Rome, dropping on way into Venice.
Thanks again for any insight/ direction!
We did not add Florence or Milan....just not drawn to them....don't know why..perhaps because we will have the car...
