Gateway to Japan guidebook.
So I know this book is out of print but it looks great and I it's been recommended here by several posters. Anyway I looked on Amazon (uk) and it's at leas £48!
Now I know FW said he got a copy for about $10 but I looked on Amazon (US) and it's expensive on there too now. I have checked EBay and again between £48 and £100++ for the book, I really don't want to pay that.
Does anyone have any suggestions of where else I could look to buy it?
Thanks
S

I picked up a copy at my local free public library. It had to be delivered there from a library in another town but it only took a couple of days. I assume you can do that in the UK...
Anyway, I have it for 3 weeks and can renew twice. I'll probably borrow it again in October and take it with me.

That would be brilliant Bob, let me see if I can get it and if I can't maybe you could
post it ( if that's not too much trouble!) and yes of course I can make sure I give it you back in BKK!

I ordered a copy from Abebooks last month, delivered under ten dollars from one of their participating worldwide book sellers, Bay City Books.
I just checked and ones available are pretty expensive now ?
Power of Fodor's Forums to increase demand ?
You can read it online or borrow it as ebook with a free registration to Open Library, downloaded version needs free adobe software.
http://openlibrary.org/
The downloaded ebook has some formatting issues but has the basics
Some other great free old time out of copyright guides to different places from the early 1900s and on, just search Japan Travel
Some Lafcadio Hearn ebooks have some great writing and illustration.
Good Luck

Thanks for the above, I am holding out to be able to buy this as i love to keep my guide books and seeing as we are not going till Nov I hope the prices ( dramatically) come down.....
I will check all the other options though if I don't end up buying.

"Do you think they know we are ALL going to Japan this year.?......"
It could be a diabolical algorithm designed to sense interest in a title.
It seemed when I ordered mine there were more plentiful choices and a wider range of prices and conditions. Its hard to understand a $265 dollar price on a lightly used paperback and that the $990 copy of same sold yesterday.

Have to clarify as I don't want to start wild internet claims.
I don't know if the book sold, I seriously doubt it, only that when one searches the title, wildly disparate prices show up beyond all reasonable expectations.

Wow, now I feel really bad that I have carved my Gateway up in sections so I don't have to carry the whole book when I go to one area.....I could have sold it online and made another trip with my profits.... ;-)
