Try the 4Rooms in Foz do Douro, Porto. You'll like it.

By the way keithman, if you don't know Porto at all, the 4Rooms is really quite a distance from the center of Porto and most everything of touristic interest.

I don't get the constant flogging of this company and its restaurant on Fodor's. When a poster posts "good location is most important", isn't it plain the poster is asking for a location that is convenient for seeing the heart of Porto?

A few years ago I stayed at Grande Hotel de Paris, rua da Fabrica. Quaint place - old-fashioned (it is the oldest hotel in Porto), full of antiques. Room was basic, breakfast was great. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard or the garden.
The location is very good, lots of restaurants in the area and Sao Bento station very close. Very good value for money.

For your enlightenment, 4Rooms does not have a restaurant, but then you've obviously never ventured very far from the city center. Being a 20-minute tram ride away offers more than a few good opportunities to see what the city is really like. And as already noted, taxis are very inexpensive.

By the way, the restaurant your referred to, is Pedro Lemos, considered one of the top restaurants in Portugal (www.pedrolemos.net).
